If you are looking for where to eat and drink coffee in Cuenca Ecuador with kids, this is a list of the cafés and restaurants we actually tried as a family.
We spent a lot of our time in Cuenca walking through the city, finding playgrounds, stopping for coffee, and looking for easy food that worked for both us and our kids.
Some places were beautiful coffee shops with pour-over coffee and sweet treats. Others were casual restaurants where we could get empanadas, tacos, pizza, wings, or an easy breakfast without making food feel complicated.
This is not a list of every restaurant in Cuenca.
It is simply where we ate, what we ordered, and what worked for our family while exploring the city with kids.
Best Cafés in Cuenca Ecuador With Kids
We went to a lot of cafés in Cuenca, partly because we love good coffee and partly because cafés are one of the easiest stops with kids while traveling.
A good café can reset the whole day.
It gives the adults a coffee, the kids a pastry or smoothie, everyone a place to sit, and sometimes just enough of a break before heading to a playground, walking through town, or going back to the Airbnb.
Cuenca had several cafés that worked well for that, but one stood out above every other coffee shop we visited in Ecuador.
Coffee COR
Coffee COR was the best coffee shop we went to in Ecuador.
You could immediately tell the owner genuinely cared about coffee and the craft behind it. This was not just a place serving drinks quickly. There was a huge amount of detail, precision, and artistry behind everything she made.
When a customer ordered her pour-over coffee, she would explain the different beans, flavor profiles, and process while preparing the coffee. It was an experience.
We ended up getting the tonka latte. It was one of the best coffees I have ever had.
The tonka bean has this warm vanilla-like flavor that made the whole drink taste completely different from a normal latte. It was a coffee you keep thinking about afterward. Up there with Vietnamese egg coffee for me.
We came back multiple times during our stay because the coffee was that good.
Out of every café we visited in Cuenca, this was the one that felt the most memorable because you could feel how much care went into the experience.
Café de la Sucre
Café de la Sucre was the first café we went to in Cuenca.
It was more of a straightforward espresso-style coffee shop and felt simpler compared to some of the other cafés we visited later. The coffee was solid, and they also had pastries and snacks that worked well for the kids.
This is the kind of place that works well if you just want an easy coffee stop while walking around the city center without making it a whole destination.
Slow Brew Coffee Shop
Slow Brew Coffee Shop was a little farther from where we were staying, but it ended up being a really nice stop.
Steven got his pour-over coffee, the kids were able to sit and play for a while, and the whole place had a relaxed feel to it.
We also happened to go on Valentine’s Day, and the owners gave the girls roses, which was such a sweet little moment and honestly one of those small travel memories that sticks with you afterward.
It was not just about the coffee. It was the overall atmosphere that made us glad we went.
Sinfonia
Sinfonia became an easy stop for us because it was near Parque de la Madre, one of the playgrounds where we spent a lot of time with the kids.
We would grab coffee and pastries there before heading to the playground, which made it fit naturally into our daily rhythm in Cuenca.
The coffee was good, the pastries worked well for the kids, and it was just an easy, reliable café stop when we wanted something simple before spending time outside.
Nevius Coffee
Nevius Coffee was probably the most visually beautiful café we went to in Cuenca.
It has a more French or Paris-style feel, with elegant interior design and sweeping views overlooking the city, the cathedral area, and the surrounding mountains.
Steven got a pour-over coffee, I had a mocha, and the girls got snacks while we sat and enjoyed the view for a while.
They also had crepes, desserts, and other food options, so it worked well as more than just a quick coffee stop.
If you want a café in Cuenca that feels slower, scenic, and more atmospheric, this was one of our favorites for that.
Wantuk Cafe
Wantuk Cafe was outside the main city center near another playground we visited with the kids, so we paired the two together.
The café itself felt unique because it was set up inside what felt like an older house with different rooms and seating areas throughout the building. Each space had its own style and interior design, which made it feel more interesting than a typical coffee shop.
We sat outside surrounded by plants and flowers, which made it feel quieter and more relaxed than some of the cafés closer to downtown.
The drinks here were also huge.
Steven tried a bonbon coffee for the first time, and the kids got large smoothies that they loved. It was more expensive than some of the other cafés we visited, but the portions were much bigger too.
Best Restaurants in Cuenca Ecuador With Kids
We did not eat out for every meal in Cuenca, but there were a few restaurants we kept coming back to because they were easy, affordable, flavorful, or simply worked well with kids.
Some were quick local spots we randomly stumbled into while walking through the city. Others were places close to where we stayed that made dinner simple after a long day out with the kids.
That is usually how we find our favorite food while traveling.
We walk several blocks away from the main tourist center, look for places filled with locals, and try whatever smells good. Some of our best meals in Cuenca happened that way.
Cafetería Jhuly
You really cannot visit Cuenca without trying empanadas, and the best empanadas we found were at Cafetería Jhuly.
We actually stumbled upon this place by accident while walking several blocks away from the city center looking for food. That is usually how we try to find local spots while traveling instead of staying directly in the busiest tourist areas.
The empanadas here were massive and filled with flavorful beef and chicken.
This ended up being one of those places where we immediately knew we would come back if we lived nearby. Simple food, affordable, filling, and the local spot we hope to find when traveling.
Morlaco’s Tacos
Morlaco’s Tacos reminded us a lot of the street tacos we had in Mexico City.
It is a very small taco spot, but the tacos were incredibly flavorful and affordable. We ordered tacos for all of us, and both the adults and the kids loved them enough that we immediately ordered more.
We also got horchata, which was really good alongside the tacos.
This was a casual place that did not need to be fancy because the food itself was the reason to go.
Fabiano’s Pizza
Fabiano’s Pizza was close to where we were staying, which made it one of our easier dinner options in Cuenca with kids.
We ended up eating there twice during our stay because it was simple, reliable, and the pizzas were huge.
What stood out most was the crust. It had a lighter texture and did not feel overly heavy or greasy afterward, which made a big difference when ordering pizza while traveling.
For us, this was an easy family meal that worked well after a long day walking around the city.
Café Nucallacta
Cafe Nucallacta was one of those places we kept walking by on our way to the playground, and it was always busy.
It felt very local and very Ecuadorian, which made us want to finally go in and try it.
We ended up going for breakfast and were really happy we did. We ordered coffee, two burritos, and two breakfast sandwiches for the kids, and everything was simple, filling, and really good.
It was one of those easy local meals that worked well before starting the day with kids.
Hot Wings Alitas
Hot Wings Alitas was right down the street from where we were staying, so it became one of our easier dinner spots in Cuenca.
The portions were huge for the price, especially if you are hungry after walking around the city all day. We got wings and fries, and it ended up being a lot of food.
The inside also had a fun retro American feel with a heavy rock-and-roll theme, which made it feel different from a lot of the other places we ate in Cuenca.
This was not a fancy meal by any means, but it was easy, filling, and worked well with kids after a long day out.
Final Thoughts on Eating and Drinking Coffee in Cuenca Ecuador With Kids
One of the things we really liked about Cuenca was how easy it felt to build simple routines around food and coffee while traveling with kids.
We had playground cafés, local breakfast spots, huge empanadas, tacos we still talk about, easy pizza nights, and some of the best coffee we had anywhere in Ecuador.
Not every place needed to be a major food experience either.
Sometimes the best spots were simply the ones that fit naturally into the day. The café before the playground. The taco place where everyone wanted seconds. The breakfast restaurant we kept passing until we finally went inside.
That is usually how we travel as a family.
We walk a lot, explore slowly, stop when something looks good, and try not to overcomplicate food while traveling with kids.
Cuenca worked really well for that.
