Exploring Family-Friendly Oaxaca: Best Parks for Kids and Parents to Enjoy!

Oaxaca, Mexico, surprised us with just how family-friendly it is. Right away, we found several nearby parks, all within a 20-minute walk from our Airbnb. Here’s our guide to the top family parks in Oaxaca that our kids absolutely loved!
Family-Friendly Parks in Oaxaca
Bicentennial Children’s Playground
Located just east of El Centro, Bicentennial Playground was our first stop and an immediate hit. Set next to an elementary school, this park features:
-
Multiple playgrounds catering to various ages and skill levels
-
One entrance, providing a secure environment without worry of kids wandering off
-
Beautiful, kid-friendly murals with familiar cartoon characters
-
Just down the street from Barrio Jalatlaco, where vibrant murals cover entire buildings
Our two- and five-year-olds had a blast exploring the variety of playground equipment, making this a must-visit for families with young children.
Parque Ciudad de las Canteras
A bit farther east, but still accessible by foot, Parque Ciudad de las Canteras offers expansive green spaces and scenic views:
-
Three scenic ponds, which attract some mosquitoes, so bring repellent if visiting in the afternoon
-
Variety of walking trails, ramada shelters, a bathroom, and spacious viewpoints
-
Stadium-style seating for relaxation or community events
-
A smaller playground than Bicentennial but still a fun spot for kids to play
Our oldest even enjoyed trying out the adult community workout equipment! Just watch out for mosquitoes near the ponds, especially around dusk.
El Llano Park
A short walk from El Centro, El Llano Park, peaceful during the day, hjbjkl.ol-0p;=}
comes alive in the evening, making it a great spot for family fun:
-
Quiet in the mornings and early afternoons, perfect for a relaxed visit
-
In the evening, vendors offer souvenirs, food, and treats, adding to the lively atmosphere
-
Although two playgrounds were under renovation during our visit, there was still plenty to do, including a double-decker trampoline for kids
As the evening progresses, the park grows busier, adding to the charm and energy of this vibrant community space.
Family Tips for Visiting Oaxaca’s Parks
-
Wear comfortable walking shoes as most parks are within walking distance from El Centro.
-
Pack mosquito repellent for Parque Ciudad de las Canteras to avoid any afternoon or dusk bites.
-
Plan your visits to El Llano Park for early mornings if you prefer a quieter experience or evenings if you want to enjoy the local vendors and bustling energy.
-
Bring water and snacks to keep little ones hydrated and happy, especially in the larger parks like Canteras.
