San Miguel de Allende is a colonial city known for its cobblestone streets, rich history, and stunning architecture. However, it’s also packed with green spaces and parks that provide a peaceful escape for families. Whether you’re exploring the lively El Centro or looking for more hidden gems, there are family-friendly parks in San Miguel de Allende has for every family.

With the city being so compact, parks can be tucked away, and you might not even notice them as you stroll through town. Here’s a guide to the best parks we found, each offering a unique experience for kids and families.

Best time to visit

November to April is ideal, with pleasant weather and fewer chances of rain. Spring and holiday periods may be busier, so consider planning your visit around these times if you want to avoid large crowds.

Family-Friendly Parks in San Miguel

1. Parque El Chorro

Parque El Chorro, located next to the popular Benito Juárez Park, is a quiet and scenic spot often missed by tourists. This park’s main feature is its long staircases and beautiful view over the city. It’s known for its historical significance, as this is where San Miguel’s first freshwater springs were discovered. While not stroller-friendly (you’ll need to leave strollers at the bottom of the stairs), it’s a fun spot for kids to run around and pretend play. The tranquil setting and stunning view make this a hidden gem for families who want a peaceful experience.

2. Parque Benito Juárez

This is the go-to park for families. It has a large playground, workout equipment, and plenty of paths for strolling. Vendors often sell snacks and goods near the playground, and there’s a public bathroom available for 6 pesos. Whether you’re looking to relax, meet locals, or let the kids burn off energy, Parque Benito Juárez is a must-visit. There are also many local artists in the park, be sure to check our their art work while you’re there as well. Stroller-friendly paths and beautiful greenery make it easy to spend a few hours here. You might even see wedding photoshoots taking place, which adds to the charm!

3. Jardin Allende

While there’s no playground in Jardin Allende, the heart of San Miguel is always full of life. The iconic La Parroquia Church is amazing to see on any family outing, and the kids will love watching the lively crowds. Grab some snacks from the nearby vendors and enjoy some people-watching while soaking in the cultural atmosphere. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a traditional Mexican wedding! The pedestrian-only streets make it safe for kids to run around, but be mindful to dress appropriately if you plan to enter the church.

4. Parque Zeferino Gutiérrez

Tucked away and fenced in for safety, Parque Zeferino Gutiérrez is a wonderful spot for families. It features a grassy area for picnics or soccer, a central fountain with flowing water, and some playground equipment. Unfortunately, a few toys were broken when we visited, so it’s a good idea to check the playground before letting your kids play. The park is stroller-friendly, and the paths are easy to navigate. There’s also a small stadium seating where occasional shows may be held (we saw none). Parking is minimal, so plan accordingly and you have to park on the nearby street if full. This park is a peaceful, quiet escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, offering a mix of nature and playtime.

5. Guadiana Park

This small, clean park is located near the SANO organic store, making it a convenient stop after a grocery run. While there’s no playground here, it’s a lovely green space where local families often bring their dogs and let their kids run around. Strollers work well in this park since there are no stairs or uneven paths. It’s a perfect spot for imaginative play, and our kids loved making up games around the trees and dry fountain. Bring a ball or let your kids’ imaginations run wild—there’s plenty of space for low-key fun here.

6. Ignacio Allende Park

Located on a hillside, Ignacio Allende Park has a mix of older metal playground equipment and newer plastic structures. If you stop here, be sure to check the equipment before letting the kids play—some of the older pieces didn’t feel particularly safe, especially the metal slide with the sharp raised edges. However, the newer playground is great, and the park offers plenty of shade, making it a cool retreat during hot afternoons. There’s also a fenced-in field where kids can run around or kick a ball. This park is not stroller-friendly due to the stairs you need to climb to reach it. Although it’s not my favorite park, it’s worth stopping by if you’re in the area.

Packing Tips

Bring comfortable shoes for walking on cobblestone streets, plenty of sunscreen, and water bottles for park days. Pack a ball or outdoor toys to keep the kids entertained at parks like Guadiana or Ignacio Allende. Always carry small change for bathroom fees (usually around 6 pesos).
