San Miguel de Allende is a dream destination for families looking to experience vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning colonial architecture—all in a safe and walkable setting. From exploring colorful markets and tasting delicious local cuisine to discovering hidden courtyards and kid-friendly parks, this charming town offers something for every age. Whether you’re strolling through the lively JardĆn Principal or taking a fun day trip to nearby hot springs, this family guide to San Miguel de Allende will help you plan the perfect adventure with kids.

Where to Stay

If you’re visiting with family, I highly recommend staying in Centro Histórico. Everything is walkable, and it puts you right in the middle of it all—without the need for a car. Uber is a great option for getting you and your family to spots like La Gruta, and if you’re planning to visit La CaƱada de la Virgen, you can book a bus tour ahead of time for easy transportation.

Don’t forget to bring pesos! San Miguel isn’t known for accepting other currencies, so it’s best to pull cash from an ATM when needed. We always use our bank card and have never been charged ATM fees.

Day 1: Explore El Centro & La Parroquia

  • Morning: Start your trip by walking around El Centro. The kids will love running around El JardĆn (main plaza), and the iconic La Parroquia is a must-see. Sometimes, you’re even allowed inside.

  • Afternoon: Head to Benito JuĆ”rez Park, where there’s plenty of space for the kids to burn off some energy and meet both locals and visitors.

  • Evening: For a sweet treat, grab churros at Chocolate y Churros San AgustĆn in El Centro. Trust me, they’re worth it!

Day 2: Relax at La Gruta & Sunset at El Mirador

  • Morning/Afternoon: Take a half-day trip to La Gruta Hot Springs—an Uber will get you there, so no need to worry about parking. If you prefer to drive, parking is free but limited, so get there early. The warm pools are perfect for family relaxation, and they have food available onsite.

  • Evening: After a relaxing afternoon, head back to town for a sunset at El Mirador. The views are incredible and a great way to wrap up the day.

  • Late Morning: After breakfast, wander over to La Aurora for some local art. The galleries are fun for everyone, and it’s a cool spot to check out unique pieces.

  • Morning: Take the family to El Charco del Ingenio, a gorgeous botanical garden with plenty of trails and beautiful spots to explore. Keep the slide a secret from the kids until you get there—they’ll love it!

  • Afternoon: After exploring, grab lunch or head back to El Centro to relax. There’s always something fun going on in this area—it’s never a dull moment.

Day 6: Explore La CaƱada de la Virgen

  • Morning/Afternoon: Spend half a day at La CaƱada de la Virgen, an ancient pyramid site just 40 minutes outside of San Miguel. It’s a cool mix of history and outdoor adventure that’s great for kids. Make sure to book your tour ahead of time and arrive early—the bus to the site leaves at 10 AM!

  • Evening: After your adventure, head back to town for a cozy family dinner and a relaxing night.

Day 7: Free Day & Shopping

  • Morning: For your last day, revisit any favorite spots or take it easy. Stroll through El Centro, explore artisan markets, and pick up souvenirs to remember your trip.

  • Afternoon/Evening: Spend time at Benito JuĆ”rez Park or relax at your Airbnb before wrapping up your trip with a final family dinner.

Final Tips

  • Transportation: No car is needed if you’re staying in the city center. Uber can get you everywhere you need to go. For the day trip to Guanajuato, renting a car or taking a bus works perfectly.

  • Money: Make sure to bring pesos! Many small shops and markets don’t take cards, and it’s easier to pay with cash. Using an ATM is the simplest way to get what you need without any fees.
