I don’t usually write about a car rental experience, but after working with Riviera Maya Travel Services, I had to share. During our 20-day stay in Akumal, we realized at the last minute that we needed a car, even though we initially planned to go without one. The Riviera Maya coastline is spread out, and unless you’re staying at a resort where everything is right there, you’ll need a car to get groceries, sightsee, or explore the beautiful surroundings—which is exactly what we wanted to do.

One important thing to know about renting cars in Mexico is that, even if you have your own insurance coverage, you’re required to purchase the local car rental company’s basic coverage. This can drive up the price, but for 20 days, we paid just $537 USD, and that price included insurance! On top of that, we had to put down a $400 USD deposit, which was returned to us when we gave the car back.
2. Free Car Delivery and Airport Drop-Off
The convenience was amazing. The car was delivered directly to our Airbnb rental at no extra cost. Plus, on the day we left, we were driven to the airport—again, free of charge. We simply got out of the rental car at the airport and were on our way. It couldn’t have been easier or more stress-free.
3. Responsive Customer Service
We had a minor issue when the car didn’t start after a visit to one of the cenotes, making us think the battery was going. I reached out to the owner via WhatsApp, and she immediately arranged for the car to be swapped out. No hassle, no extra fees. The owner was super responsive and easy to reach throughout our entire trip.
4. Reliable and Trustworthy
It’s rare to find a car rental service that feels this trustworthy. Our Airbnb host had total confidence in this company, and after using them ourselves, I can see why. We were impressed by the level of service and care they provided throughout our stay.
