Planning a trip to the City of Lakes? Udaipur, India, is known for its stunning palaces, vibrant markets, and scenic lakes—but it doesn’t have to come with a high price tag. In this post, we’ll break down everything you need to know much an Udaipur trip cost, from affordable accommodations to local eats and family-friendly activities that won’t stretch your wallet. Udaipur can be both magical and manageable on a budget.
In total, we spent $962.91 for 2 weeks for a total of $68.78 per day for our family of 4. Let’s see how that is broken down. All amounts shown are in US dollars. Recommend checking out our blog post on how we use ATMs and utilize credit cards while traveling.
Accommodation—$614.26 or $43.88 per night.
Our vacation rental in Udaipur was in a quieter, more residential part of the city — away from the busy tourist zone, but still walkable to the main attractions. We were about a 20-minute walk from the Lake Pichola area where most of the sights are, and just 15 minutes from Fateh Sagar Lake.
The location worked really well for us. It gave us a break from the crowds, while still being close enough to explore. The apartment had two bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a washer — everything we needed for a comfortable stay with kids.
Eating Out – $128.50 or $2.90 per person per meal
We ate out more often in Udaipur than we did in other parts of India — and honestly, it was worth it. The city is filled with rooftop restaurants overlooking the lakes, and we wanted to take full advantage of that.
We still struggled a bit to find food the kids were excited about, so we ended up returning to a few “safe” spots. As usual, we used the Swiggy app, which is like Uber Eats or DoorDash in the U.S., but cheaper and way more efficient.

Here’s a breakdown of where we ate:
-
Cafe Grasswood — $26.59
This was our breakfast go-to for the kids. Muesli, yogurt, and pancakes kept everyone happy. We went here twice. -
Schezuan Express — $29.02
They had chicken wings that were mild enough for the kids. Another repeat spot — we ate here twice too. -
Smacky House of Fries — $6.46
Yes, we needed comfort food. Fries to the rescue. We ordered from here on two separate occasions. -
Shawarma — $9.38
Picked up shawarma one night — it ended up being spicier than expected, but flavorful. -
Saga — $11.75
A rooftop Indian restaurant with beautiful lake views and a calm, relaxed vibe. -
Jaadoo Pizza Project — $12.69
Fantastic thin-crust pizza with real Italian-style flavor. One of the best Western-style meals we had in India. -
Natural View Restaurant — $17.32
Another scenic rooftop spot with views over Lake Pichola. The setting really made the meal. -
Swiggy — $15.29
On our last night in Udaipur, we kept it easy and ordered in. As always, Swiggy delivered quickly and without a fuss.
Groceries – $101.58
Since we were only in Udaipur for two weeks, we didn’t stock up on a ton of groceries. We kept it simple with basics, snacks, and fresh produce from the local market.
On average, we spent about $1.22 per meal for our family of four, which included snacks throughout the day.
Here’s how it broke down:
-
Nexus Mall Hypermarket — $35.52
This was one of the larger grocery stores we visited for packaged items and staples. -
Raliant Smart Hypermarket — $26.64
Another supermarket we tried out while exploring the area. It had a decent selection and was easy to navigate. -
Local market — $39.42
We bought fresh fruits, veggies, and small everyday goods from vendors near our rental. It was convenient and gave us a little glimpse into local life.
Transportation – $46.47
I’ve left out the cost of our flight into Udaipur since everyone will be traveling from different parts of the world, and flights vary widely. That said, we did use Daily Drop Pro to search for redemption bookings using credit card points earned from our favorite credit card — a great way to save on long-haul travel.
For getting around Udaipur, we mostly relied on tuk-tuks. They’re everywhere. You can simply flag one down and offer a price — just stand firm. If they say no, another one will pass by within minutes. The supply is high, so don’t feel pressured to overpay.
Here’s what we spent on local transport:
-
Uber from the airport to our accommodation — $10.38
This was one of the only times Uber actually worked for us in Udaipur. The rest of the time it was more hassle than help due to unreliable service and some shady experiences. -
Uber attempts — $9.88
We tried using Uber a couple of other times, but eventually gave up on it. It just wasn’t worth the effort compared to the ease of tuk-tuks. -
Tuk-tuks — $26.21
Most of the time we walked, but when something was out of reach — especially with tired kids — we hopped in a tuk-tuk. Our biggest single ride was to Bahubali Hills, where we negotiated for the driver to wait and bring us back afterward.
Tourist Attractions – $72.10
We packed a lot into our time in Udaipur, and most of the experiences were incredibly affordable — perfect for traveling with kids. The city is full of history, art, and outdoor spaces, so there was always something to explore that kept everyone engaged.
Here’s what we spent:
-
Jagdish Temple — $1.15
This 17th-century Hindu temple was beautiful and filled with intricate carvings and spiritual energy. Entry was free, but we left a small donation. -
Rajiv Gandhi Garden — $0.35
A peaceful, well-kept park with open grassy areas, lakefront views of Fateh Sagar Lake, and a large kids’ playground. A great spot for a slower-paced afternoon. -
City Palace — $9.21
This grand palace complex overlooks Lake Pichola and offers a mix of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. Tickets were 400 rupees per adult, and the kids got in for free. -
Gulab Bagh Park Train — $4.50
A short train ride that loops through the park — simple but a huge hit with our kids. -
Dharohar Folk Dance Show — $9.42
A vibrant cultural performance full of music, traditional dancing, and puppetry.
Check out this post for more about the show. -
Maharana Pratap Smarak — $3.22
A large memorial park with beautiful gardens and open space for the kids to run around. It felt calm and uncrowded — a perfect break from the touristy spots. -
Bahubali Hill entrance fee — $0.23
There’s a small fee to access the trail, even though it’s just a hike — not sure why, but it was minimal. -
Ropeway to Karni Mata Temple — $6.35
Took the cable car up for panoramic views of the city and Fateh Sagar Lake, with a peaceful Hindu temple at the top. -
Sanju Arts miniature painting class — $13.86
Our kids got to take a hands-on art class with Sanju, a well-known local artist. It was one of the more unique, creative experiences we’ve done on this trip. Click here for our Google Maps Pins Guide that show were all the sites are including Sanju Arts. -
Indian cooking class — $23.81
This was a fun, interactive activity for both the kids and us. We got to prepare traditional Indian dishes from scratch and learn more about the local cuisine.
Miscellaneous – $0.00
Healthcare- $0.00
- It was not time for the monthly renewal for our SafetyWing Nomad Insurance.
Total: $962.91
What We learned
Transportation
Tuk-tuks were our go-to. There’s no shortage of them in Udaipur, so it’s easy to flag one down. Just be firm on your price — if one driver doesn’t agree, wait a minute and another will come along. You’ll almost always find someone willing to take your offer.
Food
We found a handful of great rooftop restaurants that not only had beautiful lake views, but also served food our picky eaters could actually enjoy. That’s a win-win in our book.
Accommodations
Our vacation rental had everything we needed for a comfortable stay — two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a washer. It was about a 15–20 minute walk to the main attractions, but we loved being in a quieter part of town. Plus, we had a produce stand right around the corner, which made life easier.
Udaipur offers so many budget-friendly things to do, especially around scenic Lake Pichola. It’s a great place for slow travel with kids, blending historic landmarks, art, and cultural experiences in one walkable, beautiful city.
